OFF2000: "You need a newer version of
HHCTRL.OCX" Error [Q217578]
Q217578
The information in this article
applies to:
-
Microsoft Office 2000
SYMPTOMS
When you click a Help topic
offered by the Office Assistant, the following error message may
appear:
You need a
newer version of HHCTRL.OCX to be able to read this file.
You may also have to click the OK
button several times before the error message goes away.
CAUSE
The above error message may
appear if all of the following are true:
-
You are using Windows NT 4.0.
-and-
-
You have Internet Explorer 4.01 SP1 or earlier installed.
-and-
-
The AlwaysInstallElevated policy is turned on.
-and-
-
You are not a member of the Administrators group.
-and-
-
You, not an Administrator, installed Office.
The HTML Help components are only
installed when Setup is performed by a member
of the Administrators group.
NOTE:
This problem does not occur if you install Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2
before you install Office. It also does not occur if the Administrator
used the /j switch to advertise Office instead of applying the
AlwaysInstallElevated system policy.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, do
either of the following:
Method 1: Install Internet
Explorer 5.
1. Log on as a member of the
Administrators group.
2. Double-click IE5Setup.exe in
the \IE5\En folder on the Office CD.
3. Follow the instructions in the
Internet Explorer 5 Setup dialog boxes.
Method 2: Run a command line to
install HTML Help.
If you do not want to install
Internet Explorer 5, you can run a command line specifically designed
to install just the necessary HTML Help files. To do this, do the
following:
1. Log on as a member of the
Administrators group.
2. On the Start menu, click Run.
3. In the Open box, type the
following and click OK:
" <path>\IE5\En\ie5setup.exe /c:"ie5wzd.exe /m: /q:a /r:n
/E:Gensetup,HTMLHelp /s:""#e""" " (without the quotation marks)
NOTE: <path> in the above
command line is the full path to your Office
Setup files. If you are using a CD, this is your CD-ROM drive
letter.
NOTE: When you run the command
line listed above, you do not receive a prompt
indicating whether the command is successful.
4. Log off as the Administrator.
5. Log on as the non-Admin user.
