The first step in trouble shooting word problems should be going to start/run, and typing in “winword /a”  (without Quotes).  If word behaves correctly like this, then remove the normal.dot file by going to find files and folders from the start menu, looking for it on C:, then deleting it. (this is while word or winword /a is closed).

Then go to start/run, and type in regedit, this starts registry editor-do not delete anything else in this area!!

Follow the correct path depending on the version of word

Word 97

Hkey_current_user\software\Microsoft\office\8.0\word- then delete the data and options keys

Word 2000

Hkey_current_user\software\Microsoft\office\9.0\word-then delete the data and options keys

Once this is done, go to registry at the top of the screen and go to exit, then restart word normally.
