23 September, 2005 - With the recent lawsuits from the RIAA, MPAA and others, one must think about copyright law in a way that is really different. Let's say you are going to buy a car. The dealer refuses to let you test drive it before purchase. They also refuse to give you a warranty. You are required to sign an agreement in which you cannot trade the car off, sell it since you do not really own it, you cannot repaint the car and the vehicle manufacturer can take you car back at any time. Would you accept this? I would not! But every time you buy a piece of software, music CD, DVD, VHS videotape, that is exactly what you are doing. If copyright law was applied to all business then we would be still using our feet to get around town, you would have to grow your own food, plus more! Additionally, imagine LICENSING 6-32 machine screws (which are used in everything from computers to cars and ships). A computer company would pay a license fee to the bolt manufacturer for every bolt but the bolts would still be owned by the bolt manufacturer. So when you buy your computer or car, the bolts would be owned by the original manufacturer of the components and no you! Sounds crazy? Well that is copyright law! Just imagine the cost of replacement of just one 6-32 screw would be around $5 instead of 5 cents! Think that copyright law does not affect you? Think again. Every time you buy a DVD or CD you are DIRECTLY affected by copyright law. You cannot alter, change, add to, detract that copyrighted work. The same thing goes for books, TV shows, music and on and on! Copyright and Patent law really inhibit original thought and discussion.
