When you have PC Card Power Management enabled on your
Windows 98 system, some PC Card modems need an extra delay before they
are ready. Because of this problem, your modem may not work
consistently all the time. To increase the delay, carry out the
following steps:
Click Start, click Run, and type
regedit
Then click OK and go to \HKey_Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Modem.
Click the key for the modem you are trying to use. To add a key in the
root of the modem, click Edit, point to New, and select DWORD Value.

Certain Eicon adapters cannot make Dial-Up Networking
connections after the upgrade to Windows 98, or may be missing some
other functionality. To fix this problem, first make note of your ISDN
switch/SPID configuration. Next, remove your Eicon adapter and driver
using the Network control panel. Finally, reinstall your Eicon adapter
using Eicon's Diva Install Media. Eicon customers should visit the
Eicon Web site for information on the latest Eicon ISDN drivers:
If you use any of these Toshiba computers--T610 T400
series, T2100 series, T2400 series, T4700 series, T4800 series, and
the T4900CT and T3600--Toshiba strongly recommends that you upgrade
your computer BIOS to version 5.0 before attempting to install Windows
98. The upgraded BIOS provides additional functionality for the
Windows 98 operating system. For more information in the United
States, contact Toshiba at 800/999-4273. Outside the United States,

Before you install Windows 98 on a system with a
Micronics motherboard that has a flash BIOS, make sure you've set the
BIOS read/write jumper to the read-only position. If you try to
install Windows 98 with this jumper in the read/write position, it may
cause BIOS corruption. For more information, contact your computer
manufacturer.
If your display adapter is a Rage Pro or LT Pro
product (such as an XPert 98, XPert XL, XPertWork, XPert@Play, or
All-In-Wonder Pro), or a 3D Rage II or II+ product (3D XPression+, 3D
Pro Turbo, or All-In-Wonder), you may experience problems capturing
AVI files with the ATI Video Player 5.00 running under Microsoft
Windows 98. This is because Video Player 5.00 is designed for Windows
95. If you are having problems capturing AVIs under these conditions,
be sure to update to the new ATI Video Player, which you can download

Windows 98's Add New Hardware tool in the Control
Panel can make certain systems hang and eventually lock up. Microsoft
says Window 98's incompatibility with certain (unspecified)
motherboards may cause this Plug and Play detection problem. If you
are experiencing these problems, Microsoft recommends upgrading your
motherboard's BIOS from the manufacturer's Web site.
Owners of Creative Ensoniq sound cards who have
recently upgraded to Windows 98 or plan to upgrade should know of a
problem with how the OS detects the sound card. Windows 98 detects
Ensoniq cards as Plug and Play and attempts to install its own
drivers. However, Ensoniq maintains that its proprietary drivers are
the only ones that work with its cards and that Windows 98 configures
the card incorrectly. At best, you will end up with no sound, and at
worst the system will lock up immediately. Go to the Windows 98 device
manager and remove any references to a sound card that does not
specifically say Ensoniq. Then run the Install wizard for the sound
card drivers available from
Gateway has developed a patch to solve several DVD
problems reported on specific models in its Desktop and Destination

Voodoo 2 graphics cards can work in conjunction with a
second Voodoo 2 card in SLI (scan-line interleaving) mode. This allows
the cards to work simultaneously by alternating lines of a frame,
theoretically improving performance. Gamers considering an upgrade in
order to take advantage of this feature should make sure to use only
two PCI cards rather than one PCI and one AGP. SLI mode does not work
between two different cards, and there are no plans to develop them to
do so.

The Catalyst 3500 XL is a high-speed switch
manufactured by Cisco for use in LANs. It includes a Web server
configuration and interface application that contains a vulnerability.
An HTTP request containing /exec and a known file name will reveal the
contents of that file. This vulnerability could allow a
malicious user to execute arbitrary code, and successful exploitation
could lead to a complete compromise of the host. Unfortunately, the
only workaround at this time is to disable the configuration
interface. Concerned users are urged to contact Cisco for more
information.
If an IP packet with a malformed header is sent to an
Intel Express 500 series Switch, the switch will crash. You will have
to disconnect and reconnect the power, as the reset switch will not be
operational. Intel released a beta fix some time ago, but has not yet
fully tested it. For more information, check out Intel's support site
for the Express 500 Series Switches:
A DoS (Denial of Service) attack vulnerability exists
in versions of Cisco IOS, running on a variety of different router
hardware. The switch router will crash and hang when "ip http server"
is configured and a browser connects to http:///%%. A simple
workaround is to disable that server with the following command:
no ip http server
Alternatively, the administrator can block port 80 connections to the
switch router via access lists or other firewall methods. Cisco has
provided a security advisory with more information on how to combat
this vulnerability. Browse to

MarkVision is a driver software package distributed by
Lexmark International that allows Unix systems to use Lexmark
printers. Buffer overflows exist in several packages that could allow
the overwriting of variables. This, coupled with the fact that these
programs are SUID root, makes it possible for a malicious user to gain
elevated privileges and administrative access. These bugs affect
versions 4.3 and earlier. Lexmark International has patched the issue.
Users should upgrade to version 4.4 via the following URL:
Most Netopia R-series DSL routers with firmware
revisions up to 4.6.2 incorrectly allow users to modify SNMP tables,
which should not be accessible to the average user. This bug exists
even when the system administrator has specifically limited access to
the SNMP tables. The solution is to download the latest firmware
revision (4.6.3) and upgrade. To download the revision, browse to
Netscape 6 has reported problems with ATI video cards
that use the Rage chip set. According to Netscape, images will appear
correctly at first, but will be redrawn incorrectly if the window is
minimized, maximized, or moved. There are no known fixes for this bug.
ATI Rage card owners should note that this is a Netscape problem, not
a Rage problem. It may be beneficial for users to avoid upgrading to
Netscape 6 until this bug (among others) is fixed.
ATI Rage cards include the following: All-In-Wonder 128 Pro, Rage Fury
Maxx, Rage Fury Pro, Xpert 2000 Pro, Rage 128 Technology, Xpert 2000,
All-In-Wonder 128, Rage Magnum, Xpert 128, Xpert 99, All-In-Wonder

Do you have an IBM ThinkPad Model 755cd, cx, ce, cse,
or cdv? If so, you'll be interested to know that Microsoft and IBM are
in the process of solving the following known problems:
* Mwave gets lost if you have more than 8MB of memory. IBM is working
on updated drivers. Revision 1.1 does not solve this problem. If you
install Windows 98 in a different folder, Mwave will not work unless
you reinstall the Mwave drivers using IBM Mwave Setup program disks.
This is by design. The Windows 3.1 drivers are required to run the
Mwave chip.
* If you install Windows 98 in the same folder that contains your
current version of Windows, Mwave will continue to function.
* Device Manager indicates problems with the infrared port. IBM is
updating the infrared virtual device driver (VxD) so that it works
correctly.
* Docking is not supported. IBM should soon release fixes to its Plug
and Play BIOS, which enables full Windows 98 Plug and Play and docking
support. For updates to the System Program Service Disk for your model
of ThinkPad, check the IBM bulletin board. See your hardware
documentation for information about accessing the bulletin board.
* The Suspend and Resume commands have power management problems. If
you have a 1994 BIOS, you can usually resolve these problems by
upgrading to the latest Flash BIOS revision from 1995. You can find it
on CompuServe's ThinkPad forum or on the IBM bulletin board. See your
IBM hardware documentation for information about accessing the
bulletin board.
* Using Mwave versions earlier than 1.2 can cause problems. Bugs in
these versions can cause serious trouble when Mwave runs on Windows
98. For more information, call theIBM PC HelpCenter.
If you use IBM ThinkPad Dock II, disable the BIOS for
the Adaptec 1530P SCSI controller in the docking station before you
start your computer when it is docked. If you do not, your computer
will freeze repeatedly. This controller works fine in protected mode
even without the BIOS enabled, so you should not lose access to any
SCSI devices.
To disable the BIOS, follow these steps:
* Restart your computer while it is docked.
* Press Ctrl-A to start the Adaptec SCSISelect utility.
* Choose Configure, View Host Adapter Settings.
* Choose Advanced Configuration Options.
* Change the setting for Host Adapter BIOS to Disabled.
* Press Esc until you get a prompt to exit the utility. When you exit,
the computer restarts.
Another solution is to disable the BIOS completely, thus enabling the
adapter to run completely in Plug and Play mode. The BIOS resources
get allocated dynamically at Windows 98 startup. However, this
solution requires that you change a dip switch inside the dock
station. For details about disabling the SCSI adapter BIOS, refer to
your Dock II manual.
If you plan to install Windows 98 on your NEC Versa M
and AT&T Globalyst systems, you must first set the BIOS for PCMCIA
Power to Enabled before running the PC Card (PCMCIA) wizard to enable
the Windows 98 PCMCIA support. The default setting is disabled.
To enable the PCMCIA Power setting, follow these steps:
* Restart your computer.
* When the cursor changes to a rectangle, press F1.
* When the BIOS configuration program is ready, select Power, then
change the PCMCIA Power setting to Enabled.
* Save these settings.
If you do NOT have your Presario 4834 connected to a
Compaq monitor with USB ports, make sure your BIOS is also
configured not to use this type of monitor. If you have the BIOS set
to use the Compaq monitor, but do not have a Compaq
monitor connected, your computer will turn off when you choose the
Standby command. You can contact Compaq for an
updated BIOS that fixes this problem.
Alladin Knowledge Systems eToken is a USB device used
for authentication and encryption. Access to the eToken device,
followed by a PIN number encoded in the eToken, will grant
authorization to a local user. The PIN number can be physically reset
to the default value. A malicious user can gain access to the system
by physically opening the eToken device (easily done without leaving
any trace or evidence of tampering) and copying the default PIN value
to the location used to store either the user PIN or administrator PIN
in the serial EEPROM.
There are currently no patches or fixes of any kind for this problem.
Concerned users are advised to pay close attention to who has physical
access to their system; and owners of keycards are urged to keep the
card safe at all times. Aladdin has been notified of the problem and
has taken steps to redesign eToken so that physical access to its
circuit board is much more difficult. For more information, browse to

double-click System.
* Click Device Manager.
* Click the plus (+) sign next to the System Class you want to change.
* Click Advanced Power Management Support, then click Settings.
* Make sure the Disable Power Status Polling check box is selected.
* Click OK to save your changes.
If you're running Windows 98 on your Acer system, you may hear a
low tone when you insert your PC Card after you activate the 32-bit PC
Card drivers. If this happens, remove the EMMExclude line from the
system.ini file and the exclude range data from the EMM386 line in the
config.sys file. If you still get a low tone, click Start, point to
Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click PC Card. Click
Global Settings. Then make sure that the Automatic Selection check box
is cleared and set the valid range to start at 000D0000 and to end at
000DFFFF.
