SPARCstation 5: CD Rom drive not detecting requested CD Rom during install.  FIX: Replaced CD Rom drive with Apple CDROM 600i (Also tried Sony CDR, Yamaha CD/RW and none of them would be detected as a CD Rom by the Sun SPARCstation as a CD Rom drive.  Finally replaced the Toshiba

SPARCstation 5: You must use SCA SCSI hard drives.  SCA connectors look like 68 pin Ultra wide connectors but are actually 80.  They are 80 pin because they also contain power for the drive and additional lines for SCSI id, Startup delay, external LED, and in some cases external termination.

Installing a new (or a hard drive that has been low level formatted) takes a little bit of work to get working and ready to install on a SUN SPARC.

  1. Upon boot up, Press Stop-A to get the OK prompt.
  2. At the prompt type PROBE-SCSI then enter
  3. If you have your configuration right, you should see in TARGET 3 your new hard drive and in TARGET 6 your CDROM drive.
  4. You will get an error upon booting up of WRONG MAGIC NUMBER - CORRUPT LABEL
  5. To correct that error and to use the drive you will have to label the drive.  You need not format the drive, especially if you are doing a fresh install of Solaris.
  6. To label the drive insert the Solaris INSTALL CD into the CDROM drive.  You should get the OK prompt after a time.
  7. At the Prompt Type Format
  8. You will be asked to select a drive.  Select the unlabeled drive.
  9. You will be asked "Do you wish to label the drive"  type Yes.
  10. If you are installing Solaris for the first time type Boot cdrom at the OK prompt.
