System Architecture
SYSTEM BUSES
ISA - (Industry Standard Architecture) Fully PnP only if all devices
are PnP.
Disables all other PnP ISA cards before reading a PnP card's BIOS
string and allocating resources to PnP devices.
EISA - (Extended ISA) Uses real mode device drivers to configure
devices.
MCA - (MicroChannel Architecture) Uses real mode device drivers to
configure
devices.
PCI - (Peripheral Component Interconnect) PnP compatible with W95. May
require updated system BIOS.
VL-VESA Local - (Video Electronics Standard Association) Uses ISA PnP
method,
but detects devices on the VL Bus before detecting devices on the
ISA bus.
I/O BUSES
COM: Bi-directional, buffered UART uses a single inturrupt to
transmit
multiple characters.
LPT: Generally not bi-directional.
Protocols: Compatability mode=1B
Nibble mode=4b
ECP (Extended Capabilities Port) bidirectional, 2-8MBPS
EPP (Enhanced Parallel Port)Not supported.
IDE/EIDE - ([Enhanced]Integrated Drive Electronics)
IDE supports 1 interface which supports up to 2 Hard Drives
EIDE supports 2 interfaces each supporting up to 2 Hard Drives
Protocol: ATA (AT Attatchment) supports HD's up to 528M.
LBA (Logical Block Adressing) for IDE's greater than 528M.
LBA should be enabled in either
1. system BIOS or
2. Controller's BIOS
(Maximum: 8.4G)
SCSI - (Small Computer System Interface):
SCSI I: 1 card, up to 7 devices, 8-bit bus, 5MBPS
SCSI II: CCS (Common Command Set) - complete software control system.
OPTIONAL: Wide SCSI 16-bit
Fast SCSI 10MBPS
SCSI III: Separates the CCS from the hardware. Up to 16 devices
per adapter, up to 100MBPS.
SCAM: (SCSI Configured Auto-Matically) equivalent to the SCSI version
of PnP. Must support at least the SCAM level one protocol
for automatic SCSI ID assignment, and automatic termination.
SCSI requires a LUN(Logical Unit Number) for each controller, and
each device a LUN requires a unique Device ID.
