"Error 621" or "Error
623" When You Attempt to Connect
SYMPTOMS
========
When you try to connect to MSN, The Microsoft Network, or any other
ISP that uses Microsoft Connection Manager, you may receive
any of the following error messages:
Error 621: Cannot open the
phone book file.
Error 623
CAUSE
=====
These error messages can occur if the Msnus.pbk file is damaged.
RESOLUTION
==========
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
2. In the Named box, type "*.pbk" (without quotation marks or SHIFT 8
. PBK), and then
click Find Now.
3. In the list of found files, right-click the [name of file].pbk
file, and then
click Rename.
4. Type "old.pbk" (without quotation marks), and then press ENTER.
5. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
6. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
7. On the Install/Uninstall tab, double-click Connection Manager, and
then
click OK.
8. Restart the computer.
if your ISP is MSN then do the
following:
9. Insert the Microsoft Windows 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. if
you are using Windows 95 then insert the most resent copy of msn
cd-rom you have. Press
and hold down the SHIFT key when you insert the CD-ROM to prevent the
Windows 98 CD-ROM from starting automatically.
10. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
11. In the Look In box, click the CD-ROM drive that contains the
Windows
98 CD-ROM.
12. If your ISP is MSN, then n the Named box, type "msnsvc.exe"
(without quotation marks), and then
click Find Now.
13. In the list of found files, double-click the Msnsvc.exe file, and
then
follow the instructions on the screen to install the program.
14. Restart the computer.
IF you ISP is not MSN then
contact that ISP on the final part of the procedure.
