EDIT FROM HERE

"Everyone knows you can edit a Web page in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 by clicking the Edit button. But did you know you can edit a Web page without even navigating to it? Try this: Click History. When History opens, right-click the page you want to edit and choose Edit. The page opens in FrontPage Express (assuming that's your default editor)."

FINDING THE GALLERY

"I recently started using FrontPage Express to build Web pages. I've read about a Microsoft site that includes graphics for Web pages. Can you tell me how to locate this site? Does it still exist?"

Unfortunately, the site we mentioned last year no longer exists. However, you can probably find what you need at

http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/default.asp

It looks like most of the stuff is still available--it's just presented in a different way. After you navigate to the address above, click Images.

I'D RATHER USE FRONTPAGE EXPRESS

"When I open a folder and choose View, Customize This Folder, then select Create Or Edit An HTML Document, Notepad opens. Is there any way to tell the system to use FrontPage Express in place of Notepad?"

There sure is, you can make FrontPage Express your default editor for HTML folders when using Active Desktop. Here's how to do it.

Open My Computer and choose View, Folder Options. When the Folder Options dialog box opens, click the File Types tab. In the Registered File Types list, locate and select the HyperText Template. Next click Edit, followed by New. In the Action text entry box, type

Edit

Press Tab to move to the Application Used To Perform Action entry box and type

c:\program files\microsoft frontpage express\bin\Fpxpress.exe

This is the default location for the file. If you didn't use the default location, you'll need to find Fpxpress.exe and enter its correct path. After you have entered the full path name for Fpxpress.exe, click OK to close this dialog box and continue. Back in Edit File Type, click Close. This returns you to the Folder Options dialog box. Click Close again to close the dialog box and apply your new settings.

To test your new setting, open any folder and choose View, Customize This Folder. When the Customize Folder dialog box opens, select the Create Or Edit An HTML Document radio button. At this point, FrontPage Express should open and allow you to edit the current document or create a new one.

DESIGNING WEB PAGE BACKGROUNDS

"I recently began using FrontPage Express to design Web pages. I'm very new at this and wonder if there is a way in FrontPage Express to apply a background that will stay put while the text and pictures scroll?"

Yes, you can make a stationary background with FrontPage Express.

The way to do it may not be immediately apparent, though--you need to make the background image a watermark. To do this, choose Format, Background. When the Page Properties dialog box opens, select the Background Image check box, then select the Watermark check box. Next click Browse. This opens the Select Background Image dialog box. Then select the From File radio button and click Browse. Locate the file you want to use and double-click it. Back in Page Properties, click OK to close the dialog box and apply your selections.

ADD VIDEO TO YOUR WEB PAGE WITH FRONTPAGE EXPRESS

"I recently decided to create my own Web page using FrontPage Express. My question is: Is it possible to use a video in a Web page? I have several video (AVI) files that I would like to use. Will they run correctly when placed on a Web page?"

They should run just fine. To add a video to the Web page using FrontPage Express, choose Insert, Video. When the Video dialog box opens, click Browse to locate and select your video. If you know exactly where your video is located, you can simply type it in the text box. If you do this, make sure you enter the entire path and file name:

c:\MyVideos\myvideo.avi

After you choose a video, click OK to close the dialog box and apply your selection. Before you save the Web page, you need to decide how you want the video to play.

Begin by right-clicking the image and choosing Image Properties. When the Image Properties dialog box opens, click the Video tab (if necessary) and then enter the number of times you want the movie to play after someone opens the page. If your video is a cinematic masterpiece and you want it to continually loop, select the Forever check box.

After you make all your choices, click OK to close the dialog box and save your settings. Now, you can save the page and check it out in Internet Explorer 4.

MAKE FRONTPAGE EXPRESS YOUR DEFAULT HTML EDITOR

Here is a question that appears often--how do you make FrontPage Express the default editor for HTML files? We have had several of these requests recently, so let's take a look.

To change your default HTML editor, you have to tell Windows 95/98 what you want to do. So, open My Computer and choose View, Folder Options. When the Folder Options dialog box opens, click the File Types tab and locate HyperText Template in the Registered File Types list box. Select it and then click Edit. Next, click New and type in the Action text box

edit
Press Tab to move to the Application Used To Perform Action text box and type (with the quotation marks)

"c:\Program Files\FrontPage Express\Bin\fpxpress.exe"

Note: This is the default location for this file--if you used a different location, click Browse, locate Fpxpress.exe, and select it. Now, click OK to close the dialog box and save your settings. Back in the Edit File Type dialog box, click Close. Then, in the Folder Options dialog box, click Close again.

To check out your new setting, right-click an HTML file and choose Edit. FrontPage Express should open with the file loaded.

ADDING A STATIONARY PAGE IN FRONTPAGE EXPRESS

"I have just started setting up a Web page using FrontPage Express. I would like to make a page with scrolling text, but with a fixed background. I know it's possible to make such a background, because I see them on the Internet all the time. But is it possible to create such a page using FrontPage Express?"

Fear not, Evi--it can be done. To make a background that will stay fixed while the text scrolls, you need to make your background a watermark. In this case, a watermark isn't just a dimmer version of the standard image--it's what allows the background to remain fixed.

In the last tip, we discussed how to add a background image using FrontPage Express. This time, let's consider using a background that will remain in place while the text floats over it.

To do this, in FrontPage Express choose Format, Background. When the Page Properties dialog box opens, click the Background tab. Next, select the Background Image and Watermark check boxes. Click Browse to open the Select Background Image dialog box. Click Browse in this dialog box and locate the image you want to use. When you find the image, double-click its icon to select it and close the dialog box. Back in the Page Properties dialog box, click OK to accept your image selection and close the dialog box.

Your background image should now remain fixed while the text scrolls.

CHOOSING TEXT COLOR IN FRONTPAGE EXPRESS

While we're on the subject of Web pages, here are some comments about choosing text color for your pages:

I know that many people are creating their own Web pages these days, and I would like to point out that you should be very careful about choosing your backgrounds and text colors. I have seen so many nearly unreadable pages lately that I wonder if the creators ever view their own pages after they send them to the ISP.

To make your page easy for all to read, make sure to pick a text color that shows up well over your background. Also avoid busy, bright backgrounds. I have seen some backgrounds that are too colorful for text of any color."

This is a good suggestion. We recommend that you let your new Web page sit on the computer for a few days and then look at it again. You may want to make some changes before you load it onto your ISP site.

Good luck!

WORKING WITH FRONTPAGE EXPRESS

"I have just recently started trying to develop a Web page (my ISP allows 5MB free, so why not?). Since I have FrontPage Express anyway, I decided to see what it could do. One nice feature I happened across is that you can enter HTML code while watching the screen to see what happens with a new line of code. Perhaps others would like to see how this works, since so many people are doing Web pages these days."

If you would like to see, run FrontPage Express and open an existing local Web page. The page will appear pretty much as it does in MSIE 4. Next, choose View, HTML. This opens a window that displays the Web page's HTML code.

Try making some changes to the code, and you can see immediately what effect they have on the Web page.
